'Disgraceful!' RAF veteran, 90, threatened with eviction over mobility scooter - a week before Remembrance Day

A 90-year-old RAF veteran has been threatened with eviction because of his mobility scooter, just days before Remembrance Sunday.

Ron Gibbs, who moved into his son Jason's one-bed flat last year due to his declining health, kept his scooter outside the back door.

The ex-RAF electrician used the mobility piece to walk his two Yorkshire Terriers, but a social housing manager for Incommunities warned him of eviction if the scooter was not moved within a week, citing it as a fire hazard.

Son Jason's pleas to the landlord fell on deaf ears, and he was told there was nothing they could do; the scooter had to be moved.

Speaking on his disgust at the order, Jason told The Sun: “I called them up and I spoke to the same manager and I have never been spoken to like it. He spoke to me like a piece of… well, I won’t say that word.

“He said the scooter had to be moved or we’d be evicted, and they could confiscate it.

“I think that’s disgraceful. My father is an elderly veteran, and they want to make him homeless just before Remembrance Day.

“It shows people don’t care about ex-service people.”

Incommunities, the social housing company behind the order, said: “The scooter poses a fire risk due to its storage location, which was too close to the building.

“Lithium batteries inside scooters can catch fire, putting the entire block at risk.”

The company said they were looking into “more suitable accommodation” for Mr Gibbs.
