WATCH: Zohran Mamdani declares New York 'a city of immigrants' after victory speech in Arabic
This is the moment Zohran Mamdani declared New York to be a "city of immigrants" after his election triumph.
Mr Mamdani swept to victory on Tuesday night - and after doing so, issued a personal message to Donald Trump and delivered part of his address in Arabic.
"New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants. And as of tonight, led by an immigrant," he told crowds to rapturous applause.
"So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get any of us, you will have to get through all of us."
Writing on social media as the new mayor spoke, Mr Trump said: "AND SO IT BEGINS!"
Mr Mamdani had earlier said: "As we say in Steinway, ana minkom wa-ilaykom [I am from you and for you]," an Arabic phrase delivered to Egyptian, Levantine, and Moroccan migrants in the area.
He went on to thank his wife Rama Duwaji, addressing her as "hayati", Arabic for "my life".
